💡 ADHD Tip of the Week: Body Doubling 👯
What is body doubling? It is a productivity strategy in which another person works alongside you - in the same room or virtually - as you complete a task you might find challenging. Having someone working nearby can help you stay focused, engaged, or motivated to finish the job.
This can look like:
- Reading a book or doing your own work while sitting next to your teen who is doing their homework.
- Sitting in your child's room, keeping them company while they're cleaning.
- Working on challenging emails or work at a coffee shop or library with others who are working.
- Scheduling a zoom call with other entrepreneurs or friends who need to get some challenging tasks done.
Why does it work?
- Since you decide that you're going to work, commit to what you'll work on, break it down into a bite-sized pieces, and then start doing it, it helps with procrastination, getting started, staying focused, and accountability.
- Sitting next to someone else who is focusing also works through nervous system co-regulation.
Try it out! And don't view it as a bandaid (that won't be need someday), view it as a life-long tool for yourself and your kids to use when they're having trouble getting hard things done.
